Baby-sitting rates

I got a call tonight from a lady I've never met, or worked for, that wants me to baby-sit for her sometime this week. Seems like every time I start to think work for me is starting to slow down, I get mothers calling me and asking me to baby-sit. Sometimes I've never met them and they heard about me from other mothers I've worked for and sometimes its a mother I haven't worked for in years, but it always comes at the right time when I least expect it. And sometimes before I've even went to God with my little problem.
But anyways, as I was talking to this lady, she asked what I normally charge an hour. I've been so used to baby-sitting for one lady for 2-3 years that I've forgotten what baby-sitters normally ask for and thought it'd be too much to ask this lady for for the first time. So I just told her to pay whatever she pays other sitters. When I actually researched it, I was quite surprised at how much baby-sitters make now. It's either $5.00 per kid per hour, or $9.00-$13.00 an hour depending on how long you've been baby-sitting and how old you are. For the people I baby-sit for on the side, I usually asked for $5.00 per hour. $4.00 for the first kid and $1.00 more for any other kids. $5.00 per kid per hour seems like alot. That's pretty much a parents date night money for the night depending on how many kids they have.

So, my questions is for you mom's out there, how much is normal, really?

Gosh!! I remember when I used to babysit it was $1.00 per child per hour and .50 for siblings. Of course that was waayyy before your time and I didn't know what I was doing AT ALL! You get what you pay for and I think you're worth every penny!
Sweetie, Our family's been keeping you in our prayers that God will show you the next job he has planned for you.

Well I am really no help because I have never really paid for a baby sitter. I had to work for about a month after my first baby was born and a sister watched her and told me to pay her whatever. (like a donation) So I am really no help! But if it is just a date night I think that is a little different than a daily job. Because if it was daily I think I would set and amount for the week.

I honestly don't know what a normal rate is. I know that daycare providers make GREAT money. I am also thinking about taking on a child or two (when my kids go back to school in the fall). But it TOTALLY depends on different situations. I think it is great how God provides you with work even before you think to ask for it :)

I was a Nanny....If your going to be working for someone on a regular bases i would charge anywhere from $9-$15 an hour. It really depends on what the job entails and how many children you would be watching. Will you be cleaning? Doing Laundry? Driving the kids to preschool or athletic activities? Now for babysitting for a one time things i would just let the person that is hiring you for the night to pay you what they think is fare :). You can charge hourly or for the evening.

I have heard of so many different rates. Not to sure what is standard, I guess it depends on the person you baby sitting for. I wish you luck.

I usually pay $5 an hour for date nights with my 3 kids. When I asked the sitter how that compared to the going rate he said it was less. I don't remember if he said the going rate though. He's one of the brethern's children so he was really doing it as a favor because my son requested a boy. We usually have family or brethern watch them. I think my cousin got $10 per hour per child for one lady she was working for. Late night on the weekend.
